Ripe Persimmon with high PH

In process today, ripe persimmon with a tablespoon of soda ash added to kick up the PH. This skein will go thru the cold dye bath several times and oxidize in this nice warm sun. I’m still searching for that elusive black. No iron in this dye pot…..yet. I’ve set aside the seed and pulp to save for grinding for another dye pot. Next up is to overdye one of my Japanese Indigo skeins to test suitability for green shades.

    ha! looking for various things to do with many persimmons and end up here. i am making wine too but also trying out some fresh persimmon dyeing. not the kakishibu sort. i’m wanting to dye fresh. just finished up the pomegranates…and the persimmons start to ripen. freezing them here too trying to keep ahead of the squirrels. lovely dyes!

      You’ll get the best yellow from the early green persimmons. As they ripen you go to gold and brown. Still beautiful colors, lots of tannin! I am freezing some green persimmons for the 1st time. We can compare colors.

        thanks! I love to eat them and share with neighbors. this year I’m going to even make persimmon wine. so have a hard time picking them green. but was inspired by my results so might have to start sacrificing some to the dyepot!
